These are men who care about the country," a Romney adviser told the
ny Daily News . "This is the right thing to do. It was gracious of
Obama to invite him and gracious of Mitt to accept. I wouldn't read
much more into it."
But a Democrat close to the WhiteHouse confirmed presidential aides
believe the lunch will help Obama politically by suggesting he's
genuinely willing to reach outto Republicans to avert year-end tax
increases and spending cuts that could trigger another recession.
"It's a goodwill thing that helps generate bipartisan buzz around the
fiscal cliff talks," said CUNY political science professor Jamie
Chandler. "That favors the President."
The White House announced that the lunch in Obama's private dining
room near the Oval Office will be man-to-man, with no aidespresent.
Obama broached the idea on Election Night, when Romney called to
concede. The former Massachusetts governor agreed in principle, and
aides to both men compared schedules over the last week.
